Of all the beauty products, rituals, treatments and straight-up surgeries, none has more fascination or urban legends surrounding it than fat injections for the breasts — aka fat transfer breast augmentation. Perhaps it’s because it seems too good to be true? Slimming down whilst busting up in one fell swoop — couldn’t sound dreamier, right? Then there’s all the wonderment around where exactly one can siphon out the jiggle and how exactly this miraculous procedure transpires and lasts. Since we’re all about debunking and demystifying, we sat down with one of New York’s prized nip-and-tuckers, Dr. Melissa Doft, to dive deep into the subject. Read on for our expert’s intel — she performs hundreds of these per year, so you know you’re in trusted hands.

BR

Who is a prime candidate for this procedure?

MD

The best patient is one who has a nice breast shape and wishes to increase their breast size by one cup.  Many of the patients who choose fat injections for a breast augmentation are those who have a deflated A-cup and wish to be a full A-cup. Fat injections will not cause a significant amount of cleavage like an implant.

BR

Can someone with ripples or other unwanted results from a full breast augmentation receive fat injections on top of an implant?

MD

Yes. Fat is often combined with implants in breast augmentation patients and breast reconstruction patients. It works well on ripples by creating a smoother transition from the chest wall to the implant.  I have also used it with breast augmentations to hide prominent ribs.

BR

Where is the fat typically taken from?

MD

The abdomen or thighs.

BR

Is it true that if fat is taken from the buttocks area, it has a “high morbidity rate” and will not last as long?

MD

The buttocks are not an area where most plastic surgeons will harvest fat, as it makes the buttock saggy.  The best location is the abdomen or thighs.

Slimming down whilst busting up in one fell swoop — couldn’t sound dreamier, right?

BR

How long do breast injections generally last?

MD

When the fat is injected, not all of it will survive — about 30-50% will. But that 30-50% will survive forever. After six months, a patient will typically know about how much fat has survived.

BR

Can fat injections “move” around one’s chest?

MD

The fat is injected in small threads between different tissue planes, so it does not move around.

BR

Can fat be dissolved or removed if a patient isn’t happy with the result?

MD

No, it cannot be dissolved. It is possible to use liposuction to remove or excise the fat, but since it is placed in different planes, it is not simple to remove it.

BR

What’s the downtime?

MD

Most patients will take 3-5 days off from work after their procedure.

BR

What’s the estimated cost for a fat transfer breast augmentation, and how does it compare to a traditional breast augmentation?

MD

Breast augmentation with an implant costs between $14,000-$16000, with everything included.  For a fat transfer, the cost is $12,000-$14,000.
