Meet Microinfusion: Your New Go-To For Glowing Skin

The quest for good skin is truly a lifelong journey. I’m always trying to stay on top of the latest and greatest in skin care — especially the most effective treatments. And when I come across a shortcut for smooth, glowing skin, best believe I’m sharing my sources. If nearly invisible pores and plump skin sounds good to you (I know they do for me), let me introduce you to what just might be your new favorite thing: microinfusion. We talked with Dr. Nancy Samolitis MD, FAAD of Facile Dermatology + Boutique all about this solid gold treatment.

So what exactly is microinfusion? “Microinfusion is a treatment that uses a small cartridge with 24 tiny gold needles attached,” says Dr. Sam. “We use a custom formulation of botulinum toxin (like Dysport), hyaluronic acid gel, and vitamins that are blended in the cartridge and applied to the skin via the tiny needles.” The result? Smooth, hydrated, and gorgeous skin. “Microinfusion results in smoothing of skin texture including pores and fine lines,” says dr. Sam. “The hyaluronic acid plumps up the skin and provides instant hydration and the vitamins promote brightening and repair of sun damage.” And great news for pregnant or nursing patients: since what goes in the cartridge is totally customizable, aka pregnancy safe. “We can modify the ingredients as we create a custom formulation based on your needs,” Dr. Sam says. No dysport? No problem.

How is this different from microneedling? Dr. Sam explains that while they sound similar, they are two very different treatments. “The intent of microinfusion is to drive the active ingredients into the top layer of the skin and the needles used are so short that they don’t lead to any downtime,” she says. “In contrast, the intention of microneedling is to use longer needles to create micro injuries in the deeper layer of the skin leading to production of new collagen.” Not only are the experiences different, but so are the results. “The results from microinfusion are instant and last for about a month, and results from microneedling are gradual, seen over the period of a few months, and longer lasting.” she says.

“The results from a microinfusion treatment are instant and last for about a month.”

And unlike microneedling or other more intensive treatments, microinfusion is easily done without anesthesia (she did say *tiny* needles). “The stamping feels prickly, but not painful,” says Dr. Sam, “The treatment takes about 15 minutes to complete.” Your provider will make sure you’re starting with a clean canvas, and then use a stamping motion over your entire face, including the under eye and lip area, to apply the solution to the very top layer of your skin.

Afterwards, you can expect to be a little pink and flushed, but that side effect will subside in 30-60 minutes. Since your skin will be a little sensitive, Dr. Sam recommends not washing your face or using any skincare products for at least a few hours. But here’s the best part: you don’t have to wait long for results. “The results are visible right away and are maximal in about 1 week,” she says.

If you love what you see, you can get the treatment again every month to keep your glow going. Dr. Sam also recommends pairing with a facial for even more amazing results. “You can also get microinfusion one a week after any skin rejuvenating procedure like microneedling or laser resurfacing,” she says. If you’re ready to try this treatment out for yourself, I say give it a shot. You may just get hooked on your skin’s new golden glow.
