While Lesley-Ann Brandt stars as a demon on the wildly popular Netflix series Lucifer, we can all agree that her skin is nothing short of heavenly, no? The South African-born actress has built a successful career for herself here in the States, and has learned plenty to share about beauty along the way. We chatted with her about her career journey, what self-care means to her, and the skincare she can’t live without.

TS

Do you identify with Mazikeen, the character you play on Lucifer?

LB

I have a tough shell like she does, but deep down I’m very sensitive. My friends and family mean the world to me. I’m not afraid of an uncomfortable conversation though. Trust is everything to me — lose my trust and you lose me.

TS

So much of your profession revolves around working with others on a set — how has COVID-19 affected your work?

LB

It definitely affects scripts — not many or any crowd scenes, and no kissing scenes. Overall, the crew is limited on set to who essentially needs to be there.

TS

What is the biggest career challenge you’ve faced, and how did you overcome it?

LB

My biggest challenge was believing I could move to America and act for a living. I overcame it by doing it, even though it meant not seeing my family for 4 years while trying to book work and build a life here. Having blind confidence and believing I had something to offer helped.

TS

What’s the best way to cope with imposter syndrome as an actress?

LB

Accept who you are, and love all parts of what makes you, you. I’m multiracial and multicultural and that is not a negative thing, no matter how many people have tried to make me feel like it is.

TS

What’s your best piece of advice for people that want to pursue a similar path as you?

LB

Be prepared for lots of no’s, but remember that those no’s are the fuel you need to keep going towards your goals. Use that to your advantage.

“No’s are the fuel you need to keep going towards your goals.”

TS

What was your go-to beauty product?

LB

Sunscreen. I cannot stress enough how important it is to wear and reapply everyday.

TS

Biggest beauty myth?

LB

That oily skin doesn’t need moisture.

TS

Favorite way to get your body moving?

LB

Working out with my trainer Paolo Mascitti

TS

Describe your ideal Sunday situation.

LB

Definitely a lazy family day. I’d be lying if I said I don’t crave a sleep-in, but with a 3-year-old? That’s impossible.

TS

What’s your self-care power move?

LB

Putting down my phone. It works every time and it requires very little to do.

TS

In a few words, describe beauty as you see it.

LB

Beauty is all around, comes in many forms, and it not to be managed or imposed on you by anyone but yourself.
