What’s a typical morning like for you?

JC

A typical morning usually consists of waking up at 5am to get the day started. We have two young boys that wake up at 7am like clockwork. My morning activities have to happen as the sun starts to rise. Most days include a black coffee and a drive to the beach to jump in the ocean. If waves are on offer I will usually surf during this time but if conditions are less than desirable, I will head home and do a yoga class with Tim Senesi at home. Any day I am able to get into the ocean, even briefly, it seems to set my day on a much more grounded path.

TS

Do you have a nighttime routine?

JC

My evening routine usually consists of cooking dinners with my wife, Kate, and spending time with our boys. I have discovered that our days are extremely full, so most nights lights are out early—sometime between 8:30pm or 9pm.

TS

Talk to us about mental health. How do you handle struggles?

JC

I have one area of mental health that I struggle with and that is stress. It’s one of those things where I put so much pressure on areas of my life that are out of my control and find myself spinning out from time to time. I have found a natural supplement regimen of CBD, a cortisol manager, and Manuka honey tea that has helped me tremendously. However, the best cure for me has been physical activity and diet. When my stress levels are overloaded, I realize that I have either been neglecting one or both of these parts of my routine and it takes a quick realignment to get back on track.

TS

How do you like to move your body?

JC

Surfing, swimming, and yoga are my go-to’s. I have never really been the gym type; I have found all I need in the ocean or the mountains.

What is your go-to ritual when you really want to treat yourself?

JC

Bathing has become a ritual in our household that serves as both a form of meditation and relaxation. Treating myself consists of time, calm, and solitude, so a 30-minute soak can seem like a true luxury. My go-to is natureofthings Fortifying Magnesium Soak which sends me into an extreme state of mental & physical balance.

TS

What’s your self-care power move?

JC

My self-care power move is definitely unplugging. I live a very active and adventurous lifestyle, but we have so many communication tools that make us available 24/7. This has led to some of my lowest lows, and when nothing else works, pretending my phone and computer don’t exist brings me back to a state of mind that I truly miss. I have a great example of this: one day I dropped my cell phone in the ocean on a paddle and my youngest son hid my computer charger so well that I still have not found it. I had 48 hours of no phone or computer— it was euphoric.

TS

What does your grooming routine consist of?

JC

I have started to focus on skincare during the last few years. Spending 30+ years in the sun, although protected, has long-term effects that we all know are not great for your skin. I have focused on a daily cleansing and moisturizing ritual that has really helped the evenness of my skin. 2 or 3 times a week I will include an overnight mask that has helped diminished fine lines and wrinkles caused by the sun. We have created a 4-product, plant-based system at natureofthings that has become my crutch. It’s coming later this year. I think men’s grooming is so important. I am in love with a natural deodorant brand called CORPUS who has seemed to crack the case on effective natural deodorants. I keep my hair tamed with Saturdays NYC rooming products too. They’re just simple great formulations that work very well.

TS

Baths or showers?

JC

I like both! Baths for meditation, showers for cleanliness.

TS

Biggest male beauty myth?

JC

That we don’t care. We do. Also, male beauty products do not have to be branded “male.”

TS

What was your first coveted beauty product? What’s your current favorite product?

JC

My first coveted beauty product was Baxter Hair products. That was my first step into the world of men’s grooming and opened up worlds like Byredo, Saturdays NYC, and others. My current favorite is our Nourishing Body Crème. I live in it.

TS

Let’s talk body hair: what’s your stance?

JC

Being 50% Lebanese, I had chest hair sprout at 12 or 13 along with a very light but distinguished mustache. Body hair has always been something that was on top of mind. I feel like society’s picture of hairless humans is a bit misleading. Most people have body hair in one form or another so assuming beauty is hairless is a bit close-minded. I think it’s natural and 100% fine. Keeping things in order and trimmed is totally fine and something I have been doing for years. But shaving my chest to try and appear more in line with what society deems beautiful is no longer something I practice.

TS

Describe beauty as you see it, in a few words.

JC

I think it’s less about glamour and more about a sense of well-being and self. What people value today, especially in this current climate, is very different from the last 20 years. I relish the convergence of beauty, wellness, and self-care, all of which impact your internal and external appearance. The definition of beauty is changing, and I believe it’s for the better.
