Occupation: Writer and Editor
Astrological Sign: Pisces
Book that changed your life: Renegade Beauty
Beauty product (or treatment) that changed your skin: Oxygen facials make your skin plump and glowy like no other, but I recently just became addicted to the Microinfusion at Facile. Wish I could get it weekly.
Podcast you can’t stop listening to: I guilty-love a good conspiracy podcast, especially political ones, there are too many to name. Though I probably listen to a MindBodyGreen podcast weekly. They have so many different experts on there with totally contradictory conclusions about what is correct in health and wellness. While some might find that confusing, I think it’s enlightening. It just proves that there is no black and white in beauty and health—you have to journey on to find what’s right for you.
Instagram account you love to follow: @capbeautydaily

All eyes on Nicole Lesmeister, our LA-based contributing editor here at theSKIN. When she’s not busy writing about beauty and wellness, she’s either talking about or cooking up her favorite meals. Nicole considers herself a food enthusiast, and I’m not sure who said it, but people who love food are the best kind of people. Add to that someone who also lives and breathes skincare and well, that’s the recipe for the perfect human if you ask me.

She’s not big on posting to Instagram, which feels almost like a cardinal sin, considering she’s the girl you’d turn to for any and all wellness need-to-knows. Curious to learn — what exactly is a dosha? Want the 411 on balancing hormones? Nicole’s got you.

Read on to learn more about the life-changing natural beauty book she lives by, and how she manages to dodge the Sunday scaries.

What’s your ideal night in?

NL

My ideal night in starts with food. I love to have a light, early dinner and take a bath. I’m into seed-cycling right now as a way to balance my hormones (my goal is to have little to no PMS symptoms, wish me luck on this journey of science and experimentation), so having a nut and seed mylk elixir in bed with a book after a salty soak is perfection.

TS

What’s your ideal night out?

NL

Eating somewhere delicious with my boyfriend and getting a nightcap together! He recognizes and appreciates really good food and all its details, which I feel is not all that common with men. Even though we’ve been together over 5 years, nights out like this are so full of lively conversation. He’s a super fun date!

TS

How do you Sunday?

NL

I don’t really get the Sunday scaries. I am always active during the week and on Saturdays, so I really allow myself to be lazy on Sundays, unless a hike or yoga class absolutely calls my name, or a long walk with my dog. I also love the Hollywood farmers market so much, I blow way too much money there.

TS

What’s your self-care power move?

NL

Cooking! Sorry I’m talking about food again. But having a fully stocked fridge and pantry of versatile and healthy ingredients gives me a special kind of joy. Taking an hour to prepare a meal for myself (or my friends or my boo) that’s super nourishing and delicious feels like the ultimate act of care and love. But of course a mask always feels luxurious. I’m a major mask junkie.

“I’m not what people refer to as a ‘cool Instagram girl.’ I don’t really brand myself on the internet.”

TS

How do you cope with tough days?

NL

I call my friends. I talk to my best friend Caitlin almost everyday. Somehow we are always going through similar feelings at the same time, even though we lead different lives in different cities. My ladies uplift me so much.

TS

What’s currently on your want list?

NL

I really want an LED or red light therapy tool. There is so much science to back it up, but I know it’s still relatively new so long-term effects aren’t proven yet. I keep hopping on and off the fence about what brand to get. Someone tell me if they have one they love!

TS

Best beauty buy of the past 3 months?

NL

Nadine Artemis’s book Renegade Beauty is quirky and poetic but so loaded with information about natural beauty. I love all of her products in her Living Libations line. I don’t use her full line, but I’ll wash my face with her Best Skin Ever Oil—I buy the rose one. I’ve noticed the biggest difference in the clarity and texture of my skin using it. Some people think I’m crazy because when I use it, I don’t double cleanse—a foam after the oil feels like it negates the deep nourishment of the botanicals when you cleanse it off completely.

TS

What (or who) inspires you?

NL

My best friends. My boyfriend Daniel has always followed his dream (as cliché as that sounds) and does exactly what he wants in the industry he wants. He’s super creative and always finds a way to make money creating what he believes in. It’s also amazing to watch my friends who are artists and biologists and health coaches etc., carve out a living for themselves. It’s hard, but the payoff is motivating.

TS

What’s the best thing social media has done for you? The worst?

NL

I’m not what people might refer to as a “cool Instagram girl.” I don’t really brand myself on the internet. I know I probably should in this industry and era, but it’s just not me. Adversely, sometimes I feel like my staunch non-presence actually translates as authenticity, and certain professionals and colleagues I’ve met have been able to feel trust in me because of that. On the contrary, it’s definitely also revealed that I am a huge dork.

TS

What’s a personal goal or project you are working towards?

NL

Right now I’m looking for ways to bridge the gap in my writing projects between beauty and nutrition, cooking, and food. The bridge is clear and many platforms I write for are already there, but I want to find a way to establish that for myself.

TS

Describe beauty as you see it in a few words?

NL

Completely holistic. Absolutely inside and out as well as how you perceive the world and interact with people.

TS

Let’s play F*ck, Marry, Kill skincare edition: cleanser, moisturizer, serum.

NL

F*ck moisturizer… it just feels so good. Marry serum, it works hard for you. Kill cleanser. So many of them are flawed and are actually wreaking havoc on our skin.

TS

And now makeup edition: mascara, blush, lipstick

NL

Marry all of them! This one is tough. F*ck mascara. I love it for my otherwise blonde lashes but I hate taking it off. Marry blush because it gives my face life. I really don’t want to kill lipstick, but I have super sensitive skin on my lips and many formulas don’t agree with me so it’s for the best. Rest in power, lipstick.
