Ah, brows. A topic I’ve been known to obsessed over. My personal motto: the fluffier the better. A perfectly unkempt brow is my kryptonite. If you were born with naturally thick brows, just know that I hate you a little bit (out of pure jealousy of course).

We caught up with Christina Son of SUGARIN Studio in Los Angeles, a brow expert and the force behind some of the most iconic arches in Hollywood. When it comes to brows, Christina’s eye for detail is what makes her work so damn good. Her natural approach to microblading is something she’s mastered and keeps her clients coming back for more.

From signature brow tips, to the top rated product she swears by, Christina filled us in on what’s trending for 2020 and even spilled the details on her dream celebrity brow client.

How did you become passionate about brows? What has your career journey looked like?

CS

I started my career when I went to makeup school. I wanted to explore something that was more specialized. That’s where my passion for eyebrows began. I’ve always had a passion and interest in the tattooing field so combining both to become a cosmetic tattoo artist was perfect for me. The brows frame the face and improve the overall appearance by giving a healthy glow. It can also be life changing, especially for those who are suffering from hair thinning or hair loss (i.e. thyroid, cancer survivors, alopecia etc). It restores a sense of self assurance that may have been lost. It boosts self-esteem and confidence. I am very privileged to be part of such a rewarding career.

What is the difference between microblading, ombré shading, and combo brows?

CS

Microblading is the process of applying individual hair-like strokes that mimic the natural brow hair as opposed to a penciled look. This technique is used with a manual tool instead of a machine.

Ombré shading is performed with a machine that creates a soft shaded look, similar to using a makeup brow pencil.

Combo brows is using a mixture of both techniques to achieve a more natural look combining texture, definition and fullness.

What is special about your microblading technique?

CS

I generally like to work with what the client naturally has and avoid making a drastic change. I don’t have a set pattern as each individual has their own unique shape and hair flow. I like to keep the look as natural and realistic as possible. I think it’s important to educate clients about the natural shape of their brows. Some clients may want a specific shape that is different from their natural shape, this can lead to removing hair, and as a result, more maintenance for them. There is also a chance that the hair may not grow back if it’s constantly removed. I try and preserve as much hair as possible and work with that they naturally have so you still look like yourself but enhanced.

How do I get a thick, fluffy, and perfectly natural look?

CS

I think it’s important not to over groom by waxing, threading or plucking and losing your natural texture. Combo brows is a wonderful option to help achieve this look. I would create fluffy texture and add some density to blend in with those textures for softer more natural look.

What does your personal brow routine look like?

CS

For my own brows, I use a brow gel and comb the hairs up to give a texturized fluffy look. I always use a separate disposable mascara brush and dip it the brow gel tube instead of using the brush that it comes with. I personally prefer the disposable mascara brush fibers. Other times, I just simply use an eyeshadow to give a soft powder shaded look.

What are your holy grail brow products?

CS

Hourglass Arch Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel, Shu Uemura Hard Formula brow pencil (I’ve been using this for years for a really soft powdery look) and Guerlain Brow Kit.

Which brow trends do you predict will be big in 2020?

CS

I believe brow trends in 2020 will be a softer and natural look paired with a bit of density, for a hyperreal “untouched” look.

What is the one brow mistake you hope people stop making in 2020?

CS

In 2020, I hope people stop over plucking their brows. Because you start with one hair then you carried away — we’ve all done it!

What are your tips for growing out brows?

CS

My tip for growing out brows is simple: leave them alone, let them grow out and fight the urge to pluck any hairs. It’ll pay off in the end.

Who is your dream brow client?

CS

Ed Sheeran! I would love to do a major fluffy brow on him!
