How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars, Once And For All

by Dale Arden Chong

• By Dale Arden Chong

If I could sum my skin goals up in two words, they would be these: smooth and clear. My guess is, if you’re reading this article, you would too. But like takes its toll on the delicate epidermis, taking it in the exact opposite direction of these aspirations. This is all thanks to factors like pollution, stress, and, oh yeah, acne — the bane of my existence. I admit my attitude towards acne is a little dramatic. But there’s no denying those big zits leave a lasting impression (literally and figuratively), usually in the form of leave deep, dark acne scars that can stay with us for years. Luckily, there are ways to reverse their appearance and combat them in the future. I spoke with Gabriella Gerbi, board-certified nurse practitioner at FACILE dermatology + boutique, who let us in on the best way to treat acne scars once and for all.

What is acne scarring, and what causes it?

GG

Acne scars are skin tissue that has been damaged after the acne is long gone. The skin texture may be left uneven, red and/or hyper- or hypo-pigmented. Cystic acne is what often leads to deep scars. This form of acne happens when bacteria gets trapped deep under the skin, resulting in red, swollen, and painful bumps. These typically take much longer to heal than regular whiteheads. When they do, they can leave behind some markings. Another big culprit — and one I often hear from patients — is picking. Picking at active acne can severely damage the skin and make it difficult for the skin to repair itself.

If someone wanted to treat these scars at home, without professional treatment, how would they do that?

GG

It’s truly very difficult to treat deep acne scars at home. However, a combination of proper exfoliation and consistent use of retinol can help stimulate some cellular turnover. Chemical exfoliators are key for at-home treatments. I personally love Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant as well as Senté Exfoliating Cleanser. Additionally, a nightly prescription-strength retinoid from a dermatologist is essential to stimulate cell turnover and make scars shallower. Finally, regular use of an antioxidant like Vitamin C can help repair any damage.

If someone were to go the route of professional care, what types of treatments would you suggest?

GG

One of my favorite treatments, which I always suggest in acne scarring cases, is microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This treatment uses tiny needles to penetrate the top layer of skin, which stimulates new cellular growth. PRP is full of stem cells and growth factors, which boost collagen and elastin. After treatment, your complexion will have a softer, smoother texture.

First and foremost: don’t pick!

What can someone expect when going through professional treatment?

GG

Be patient. Depending on how severe the scarring is, it can take several treatments to achieve the results you want. In the end, patients are always happy. It’s also worth noting that results will continue to get better over time.

Post-session, how should one care for their skin?

GG

Once you’ve had your microneedling treatment, be gentle to your skin. The skin will feel hot — like a bad sunburn — for about 24 hours. After that, you can expect some dryness with the possibility of flaking for a few days. Use a skincare system with a gentle cleanser, a light non-comedogenic moisturizer and mineral sunscreen during this period. And be sure to avoid exercise, saunas, steam rooms and direct sunlight as you heal.

What’s the best way to prevent acne scars in the future?

GG

First and foremost: don’t pick! I know it can be difficult, but I assure you the scar left behind is far worse than the temptation to pick at your acne! Invest in your skincare products; gentle AHA exfoliators, retinol, and a mineral sunscreen will make your skin more resilient and more likely to rebound from damage.
