If you’re a fan of next-level eye looks, you have to know about Vanessa Funes, aka @cutcreaser. With an ever-growing following on Instagram and TikTok, she showcases her talent for eyeliner and her bold and bright designs with the most gorgeous golden hour selfies. Think metallic butterflies, glistening stars, glossy faux tears, and sweet-as-candy shades. We chatted with Vanessa about what’s next for eye makeup trends, how to get into the art of eyeliner, and how she keeps her skin glowing and protected.

How did you find your makeup style?

VF

Eye makeup is so important to my overall style of makeup. Generally, I like to go easy on the rest of my face and bring out the boldness on my eyes. I genuinely do my makeup for fun, to break my own barriers, to create something that’s never been done before. I learned all my techniques and styles from other professional makeup artists and beauty content creators just by watching their videos, tutorials and mimicking their movements and their makeup choices and making it my own!

TS

What’s your favorite eye look that you’ve created recently?

VF

Definitely this butterfly liner that was inspired by a tramp stamp tattoo by @keskennedy and @raggedyroyal’s iconic butterfly makeup. I had never seen anyone try doing a tramp stamp tattoo as makeup and I finally did it. It came out exactly how I wanted!

Where do you find inspiration for your signature bright, intricate eye looks?

VF

I follow a lot of content creators on social media who focus on editorial and avant garde makeup styles, glowy skin, and minimal makeup, and they always inspire me. HBO’s Euphoria and their makeup department, led by Doniella Davy, inspired me to really dive into the minimalist editorial style of makeup used on the show. Ever since, I found so many editorial artists to appreciate. My favorite creators that have inspired me immensely are @luciphyrr, @quintinmarcell, @laur_elyse, @maytahmi, @wendysworld_xox, @raincornelius and @kianamitchell_, amongst so many others. A lot of makeup looks are never truly original, so I love to credit anyone who inspired me, even a little, so they can get the appreciation they deserve!

TS

Where should someone just getting into graphic liner start?

VF

First off, learn how to do the perfect classic wing. Once you ace that, you can do anything. Second, definitely look into colorful water activated paints as opposed to colorful liquid liners. Water activated paints have such a different consistency and are way easier to apply with liner brushes. They’re super bright and pigmented and so easy to work with. Third, just have fun. Squiggles, straight lines, any pattern at all would be so cool as graphic liner looks. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

TS

What do you think the next big eye makeup trend will be?

VF

I feel like the next big eye makeup trend could be using textiles or different textures on your eyes. I’ve seen people use pieces of denim on their eyes and I thought that would be so cool as a runway look. A lot of makeup trends come from off the runway. I hope the world goes back to bringing us iconic runway looks.

TS

What’s one makeup product you could not live without?

VF

The liner brush collab I did with By Melolops. If I don’t have those brushes, there’s no way I could do my liner the way I want it.

What’s on your beauty wishlist right now?

VF

I need the lashes @nikki_makeup uses on her clients. They’re so fluttery, minimal, and perfect! Otherwise, I definitely need more Face Lace stickers for some looks I have planned.

Tell us about your skincare routine! How do you keep your skin looking so dewy and fresh?

VF

My skincare routine has gotten simpler — I focus on hydration and exfoliating. My favorite thing to take my makeup off with is cleansing balms or oils; I love Glow Recipe Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm and Dermalogica PreCleanse to break apart my makeup before cleansing. My current cleanser is the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. My go-to toner is the Bliss Clear Genius Clarifying Toner + Serum. It clears up my minor breakouts (mostly from stress and anxiety) and it really calms my skin. To hydrate even more, I use innisfree Green Tea Seed Intensive Hydrating Serum all over my face and neck. My favorite moisturizer right now is the Tatcha Water Cream. It’s a really thin moisturizer and hydrates and calms my skin so much. I’ve found that thick moisturizers tend to emphasize my textured areas. To make my skin extra glowy, I use Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops on the highest points of my face. And of course, the most important part of my skincare routine is sunscreen. My favorite sunscreen is Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. It goes on clear, never leaves white residue, and wears under my makeup very nicely. Always use about 2 fingers worth of sunscreen!
