The Only 6 Lipstick Shades You’ll Ever Need

From classic to current, we’ve got the color for you.

There’s a national holiday for just about anything you can think of. If you were to ask me for my personal favorite, it’s National Ice Cream Day (mark your calendars for July 19). With that in mind, it may come as no surprise to you that National Lipstick Day exists — which happens to be today (July 29).

Whether it’s in the form of today’s artfully molded tubes or a tinted creme pigment from ages past, there’s no doubt that lipstick is one of the most beloved cosmetics in the world. From the fire engine red prints on the faces of classic cartoon characters to the smudges left on napkins and shirt collars, the memories of a good shade will stay on you for a lifetime (even after the stains fade away).

So in honor of the iconic product that holds the power to give its wearer unparalleled confidence, I’m rounding up some of the best lipsticks on the market. Trust me, if you’re the type of person who feels naked without their lipstick, you’ll want to keep scrolling.

MAC Lipstick Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo

Is there anything more iconic than MAC’s Ruby Woo? Anyone I’ve asked who’s gone through the search for the perfect shade of red lipstick has always sworn by the beauty brand’s best-selling shade. This is simply one lipstick you shouldn’t be without.

Kosas Weightless Lip Color in Rosewater

Those of you who want to give their lips a natural-looking boost will love Kosas’ lipstick in Rosewater, a sheer and simple pink. This non-toxic formula — which includes mango seed butter and shea butter as key ingredients — feels as smooth as a lip balm. It’ll leave a soft, healthy shine to your pout.

Y Et Beauté Lipstick in James

If you’re looking for a clean option, get yourself one of Y Et Beauté’s lipsticks.. These lipsticks go on incredibly smooth and provide long-lasting wear. Thanks to the mix of certified organic ingredients from Italy like castor, jojoba, shea, and other oils, it will keep your lips soft and hydrated. I personally love the sultry plum shade, James, because one can never have too much drama in an evening makeup look.

Pat McGrath LuxeTrance Lipstick in Unnatural Natural

Speaking as someone who has gone crazy for her brand’s initial launches, Pat McGrath — the iconic makeup artist fondly known as “Mother” — has created a makeup line that feels unlike any other. Naturally, her lipsticks are equally good. The shade Unnatural Natural is a deep, velvety brown mahogany. I love this as an alternative to traditional shades; there’s something undeniably chic about a brown lip, don’t you think?

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in It’s Happening!

If you ask me, there’s nothing like a bright and fun lipstick when you’re in a more playful mood. I’ve had this specific shade in my arsenal for years, and it’s always been one to garner a slew of compliments. Not to mention, it just puts me in a good mood. And to top it off, I’ve found that it’s one of the only matte lipsticks that doesn’t dry my lips out — something we can all agree is a plus.

Noto Botanics Multi-Benne Stain Stick in Oscillate

Those of you who want a lipstick to use as a do-it-all product will love Noto Botanics Stain Stick. Swipe it onto your lips for an effortlessly cool tint, or dab a bit of it onto your cheeks for an all-over flushed look.
