Lauren Scruggs Kennedy Shares What It Takes To Have A Healthy Marriage

Hint: you’ve got to communicate.

When we think of a picture-perfect marriage, one couple comes to mind: Lauren Scruggs Kennedy and Jason Kennedy. The blogger and author and her E! News host husband met at Jason’s work — Lauren had just done an interview with Giuliana Rancic and Jason introduced himself. After a first date of a meal at La Scala and sightseeing at Point Dume, their relationship blossomed, and the two have been happily married since 2014. How did she know he was the one? “I know it’s the most cliché thing, but I just knew,” says Lauren. “I trusted him so fully, wanted to spend every second with him, and wanted to know everything about him.”

Their relationship is built on a set of shared goals: in Lauren’s words, they strive to”to respect and love each other, to build each other up, and make each other better.” But theirs is just like any other long-term relationship, meaning the Kennedys have had their fair share of relationship challenges. We talked with Lauren to find out how she faces those challenges, what she’s learned from her marriage, and her best pieces of relationship advice.

What’s your favorite part about being married?

LSK

I love living with my best friend.  I love going through new seasons of life together. I love traveling together. I love learning more about each other every day. We have so much fun together and each equally care about growing individually and becoming better for each other and better together, so it is such a gift!

TS

What was the biggest adjustment to married life?

LSK

Merging our social styles; I am much more of a homebody and he is an extrovert! Besides that, we live so similarly, so living together for the first time was such an easy and the most fun adjustment!

TS

What have been the biggest struggles you’ve faced as a married couple, and how have you moved through them together?

LSK

The biggest struggle has been being away from my family (they are in Dallas) and learning to work through that together. We have created a good rhythm with trips and visits, and he has really tried to understand and grasp my need for that. It was a learning process through misunderstandings on both of our parts but it took those to help us get on the same page.

TS

What do you think is the biggest misconception about marriage?

LSK

That it gets worse over time or that you are locked down. Marriage is the most special gift and only gets better with time!

What’s the best relationship advice that you have received?

LSK

My parents told me to listen to understand in an argument.

TS

What’s your favorite piece of relationship advice to give?

LSK

Communicate well. Enjoy each other. Validate each other. Be intentional always. Give lots of hugs and kisses. Put your phone away and pay attention to each other. Support and encourage each other. Laugh a lot!

TS

What have you learned about yourself from being married?

LSK

So much! The biggest thing: I initially learned how much I needed to improve in how I communicated. I learned how to compromise and adjust even if it’s not easy. When you’re single, none of that comes into play!

TS

What little things do you do everyday to stay connected to each other?

LSK

We put our phones away when we get home from the day to hang out with each other. We wake up and fall asleep at the same time. We love watching a new show together. We have intentional conversations. We fall asleep back to back most nights.

TS

What’s the biggest goal you have as a couple?

LSK

To respect and love each other, o build each other up and make each other better, and to create special memories!
