Be Honest — When Was the Last Time You Cleaned Your Vibrator?

It’s been a long week, month…two years and we’ve all been searching for the good vibes amongst the chaos. For many, that meant even more self-care down there. It should come as no surprise to absolutely anyone that sex toy sales are up, and honestly I’m proud of us this is a great and healthy way to reduce stress and boost serotonin while staying socially distanced and safe! But let me ask you: when was the last time you cleaned your vibrator?

Just like taking off your makeup once you’ve already cozied into bed, washing your pleasure products while you’re still riding the wave of bliss may sound like a nuisance. But it’s necessary! Regardless of the toy, it should get a healthy sanitizing after each and every use. Although they feel great, popular sex toy materials like jelly rubber, silicone or latex can harbor bacteria or become a hot-bed for fungus. These can lead to yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis, or if you’re sharing with a partner, can pass along STIs. And just a friendly reminder, if you’re one to double dip between orifices, it’s a best practice to clean your toys before going back and forth! Save yourself the OB-GYN bill and follow these three easy tricks for keeping your devices clean and at the ready.

Read the literature

None of us really read through those device manuals upon unboxing, especially with a new tool as exciting as this, but it’s important to know how the makers suggest you care for your vibrator based on it’s material and manufacturing. If you know you’re going to be forgetful about sanitizing, do your homework on the toy’s material before you buy to make sure it’s low maintenance enough for you! Materials like metal and glass will be the absolute easiest to care for. Important things to note are whether your purchase is waterproof, and if the company suggests any particular cleaning products to accompany the toy for utmost cleanliness and longest life-span.

Keep it simple

While there are some incredible products out there made specifically for cleaning your toys without throwing the gentle ecosystem of your vulva into a tailspin, more often than not a scentless soap and hot water will do the trick. Rule of thumb: anything gynecologist-approved that can be used to clean your body can be used to clean your vibrator. Any product that is perfumed or a household cleaner should never come in contact with your vibrator. If we’re dealing with a non-electronic toy, most can be thrown in the dishwasher and run on a sanitized-cycle, sans soap (but I can’t stress this enough — read the literature first!).

Treat it right

Vibrators these days aren’t cheap (at least not the good ones) so getting longevity out of your purchase is important. Make sure you are drying your vibe properly by always air-drying in a clean environment. To ensure you won’t give yourself a fungal or bacterial infection, always store in either the care bag provided by the company or a clean and dry container of your choice. This will protect it from dust or dirt particles between uses.
