Simply put, Nicolas Flores of Sally Hershberger Salon is a hair guru. He earned this status by working under Sally herself before acquiring his own clientele and making a name for himself over the years. Some of Nick’s high-profiled clients include hair goddess herself, Jen Atkin and John Mayer.

Since Nick deals with hair on the reg, you’d assume his personal routine would be on another level of extra, or you might be surprised…

We chatted all things MANSCAPE, from body hair and fitness to his thoughts on the biggest male beauty myth. Keep reading to learn Nick’s hot take on body hair, spoiler alert: you might strongly disagree.

What’s a typical morning like for you?

NF

Waking up at 5:30am running through emails, doing a workout, and heading out for my day by 9am.

CS

Do you have a nighttime routine?

NF

My night time routine consists of unwinding from my day and getting my brain to calm down from everything going on in life. As of recent I started getting more into a skin routine which is actually therapeutic before bed.

CS

Any mental health struggles? How do you deal with them?

NF

With everything going on in everyone’s life… it’s hard not to have any mental struggles or stress. As of recent, I have decided to take on a new project outside of my full-time job and it is one of the hardest things I have done (which can make anyone go crazy). I’ve learned to stay calm and not overreact to anything which has been a huge help in keeping me more zen.

CS

How do you like to move your body?

NF

I’m not a “in the gym 7 days a week person”, but I love doing cardio to get my stress levels controlled and for keeping my weight in check.

“Don’t be the guy with hair busting out of your shirt or all over the back of your neck.”

CS

What is your go-to ritual when you really want to treat yourself?

NF

I’m huge on massages. We’re so hard on our bodies and I try and get a massage once a week or once every other week.

CS

What’s your self-care power move?

NF

After turning 30, things started changing within my body… such as what I ate, how I felt after a night out, and the effect of not having a skin regimen. For the last year I have focused more on eating healthier, getting more sleep, and finally having a skincare routine.

CS

What does your manscape routine consist of?

NF

  1. Having a good brow (not overdone, but cleaned up and trimmed)
  2. Nose/Ear hair is a must to be trimmed (as a hairstylist I tend to trim these areas for clients).
  3. Keeping body hair trimmed for a clean look.
  4. Mani/Pedi should be done weekly, whether in a nail salon or at home; especially for the guys who don’t feel comfortable walking into a busy nail salon.
  5. Scent is everything. Figuring out a scent that is clean and not overpowering is key.

CS

How do you like to do your hair on regular days? For special occasions?

NF

I usually wear my hair very short which made me need a weekly haircut and styling daily. However the last few months I have been growing out my hair and I’ve been loving how low maintenance it is. I’m going for a messy shaggy style which is a pretty versatile look to be dressed up or dressed down.

CS

Biggest male beauty myth?

NF

Using an all-in-one body wash. DON’T BELIEVE IT!

CS

What was your first coveted beauty product?

NF

My first coveted product was Peter Thomas Roth skincare when I was a freshman in high school. I swore by it at the time. It was my intro to skincare and the first time I was being told that taking care of your skin would be beneficial in the long run.

CS

Let’s talk body hair: what’s your stance?

NF

I personally am not a very hairy person, but I think body hair can be sexy. I think as long as it is trimmed and cleaned up just right is KEY. Don’t be the guy with hair busting out of your shirt or all over the back of your neck.

CS

Describe beauty as you see it, in a few words:

NF

Beauty to me is an aesthetic; it’s something we all appreciate and look forward to.
