We live in an era where influencers — as well as those they inspire — are constantly jetting off from one exotic location to the next. As a result, our feeds and our minds are filled with visual proof that these dreamy destinations exist. It’s a soft siren call, tempting everyone willing to listen to make a small number of clicks before ultimately booking their next vacation. These faraway places are no less deserving than anywhere else on the planet, but they often instill a need to explore that leaves us looking outward and forgetting what’s right beneath our noses. And sometimes, the closest place to home is right where you need to be.
There’s no denying that a flight to a new and uncharted location is one worth putting in the books. However, for a variety of reasons — timing, finances, a viral outbreak, what have you —hopping on a plane and jumping into a brand new time zone isn’t always in the plan. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t go on another type of vacation — yes, I am talking about the staycation.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying a staycation, think of it as the travel world’s equivalent to JOMO — the joy of missing out. But before you start associating the concept with quiet nights in and quality Me time, it’s more than just that.
To make sure yours is on par with those wanderlust-inducing getaways, I’ve broken down three steps for the perfect staycation. Trust me—once you get out of the at-home headspace and indulge in everything your city has to offer, you’ll forget why you wanted to leave in the first place.
“Think of it as the travel world’s equivalent to JOMO — the joy of missing out.”
Step 1: Get Out of The House
In the chance that you are putting together the perfect staycation, start with this single rule: Leave the house. A staycation doesn’t need to be far from your home base. It could be 10 minutes down the street, or it could be on the other side of town. However, to get the full benefits, staycations are best enjoyed outside of your home.
Step 2: Become a Tourist in Your City
Regardless of how long you’ve lived in your city, odds are there are a few places you’ve never had the chance to see. In which case, a staycation is a perfect time to check these must-see places off of your list. Whether you go on a historic architectural tour to learn more about your town’s past or you dine in at a new buzz-worthy restaurant, adding these to your staycation itinerary will make another day in the city anything but ordinary.
Step 3: Treat Yourself
Like any other time you’re OOO, a staycation is meant for an ample amount of R&R. Book yourself a luxurious facial, such as dermalinfusion to give yourself a refresh, a custom acupuncture session, or another unique wellness treatment. In the moments you aren’t pampering yourself, unplug from the digital world and lose yourself in a good book—you’ll thank me later.
