If there’s one thing to thank our moms for, it’s giving us our first introduction to the beauty world. They may have also given us good genes too, but it’s the beauty advice that has stayed with us straight into our adulthood. These women have taught us the importance of taking care of ourselves (both inside and out!), so we think it’s high time to recognize these wonderful women and all they’ve taught us about beauty. After all, the gratitude we have for them is infinite and the wisdom they’ve shared is everything. From skincare secrets to beauty rituals, our team at theSKIN + Facile Dermatology + Boutique share the best beauty lessons we got from our moms.

“My mom taught me to never touch my face and cleanse twice a day.” – Caroline, Medical Aesthetician

“My mom was always so fabulous (she still is!). The best beauty/skincare tips she passed down to me were really simple but something that has stayed with me to this day. She was always very adamant about my sister and I protecting ourselves from the sun. Unfortunately, this meant swimming at the beach in t-shirts and bright colored zinc sunscreen — a look that was very uncool at the time but I’m incredibly thankful for it to this day! Another beauty hack she passed down was when in a rush, throw on a red lip – you’ll look like you spent a ton of time getting ready and you’ll feel like a million bucks!” – Danielle, CEO

“My mom’s beauty routine was so quick and simple growing up. My favorite tip from her comes straight from the source — aloe vera. My mom loves to keep an aloe vera plant in her backyard and cuts the stem off to use its gel to help with any skin irritations such as healing burns, ease any scarring, or moisturizing dry skin. So simple, yet so effective. I keep a tiny one in my home just for this reason!” – Joanne, Social Media Manager

“My mother taught me the importance of wearing sunscreen (and reapplying it) at an early age, especially when outdoors. Living in Southern California we spent lots of time at the pool, beach, and soccer fields. She always made it a point to have it available and to encourage us to use it!” – Xochitl, PA-C

“My mom taught me that less is more. I had struggled with acne in my early 20’s and threw everything but the kitchen sink at it. Mom was the one who told me I was overdoing it and only after (finally) taking her advice did my skin clear up!” – Gabby, FNP-BC

“My mom taught me the importance of a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Growing up she would have us drink a glass of water and our vitamins as the first step of our morning routine. She raised my sisters and I on a plant based diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. I wasn’t your normal kid who craved ice cream – I craved things like kale, beets, artichokes and berries!” – Rachel, PA-C

“My mom told me what her mom told her: sleep with a silk pillowcase to help prevent fine lines and hair breakage!” – Sarah, Medical Assistant

“My mom and I both have green eyes. Her makeup collection has always contained several eyeliners and eyeshadows in the plum and burgundy color family. When she was teaching me to do makeup, she revealed that these shades are her favorite because the contrast they create against green eyes makes them pop. This was one of my first introductions to color theory, and I still love to reach for shadows with violet tones when I want a dramatic eye look.” Isabella, Medical Assistant

“My mom taught me since I was very young that a good daily skincare regimen and SPF are a MUST to avoid getting wrinkles. Brutal but true! She doesn’t look a day over 35, so of course that advice has stuck with me.” – Erica, Medical Assistant

“Find what you like and stick with it! My mom wore the same lipstick for as long as I can remember, and her skincare routine was always simple but consistent. Trends come and go, but knowing what makes you feel your best outlasts everything.” – Julia, Project Manager
