I think what I love most about LA is that no one bats an eyelash when you tell them you’ve been manifesting more abundance in your life, or that you just can’t commit right now because well, “Mercury is in retrograde.” There are a handful of things that are completely acceptable to do and talk about in LA that would be considered strange and likely comical in other parts of the world. Like shopping at Erewhon for starters, but I’ll save that for another story on overpriced Keto bread (bet you can’t wait).
Getting a life coach is one of those things. It didn’t quite click until I told a friend about my latest exploration into life coach land and she replied, “Oh my god, that’s SO L.A.” I never thought I’d jump on the getting a life coach train myself, but six months in and all of a sudden I’ve become everything my former self thought I despised. That annoying Monday morning person? I’m her. The positive vibes mantra lover, is me IRL. Most shockingly, I even journal now (more on that later).
Generally speaking, I’m the perfect candidate. I love anything taboo. The more ridiculous a concept sounds, the more my ears perk up with interest. Anyone else? If that’s also you, why are we like this?
Once I settled on a coach and had my first session, I felt “the shift” almost instantly but without really noticing it was happening. The biggest change? I started to feel more secure and less paranoid. This was a total game changer for me.

So, what does a life coach do?
A life coach is exactly what it sounds like. They coach you on your life, and I don’t even mean that to be funny. It’s true. A life coach will help you to navigate your emotions, identify and set achievable goals, and figure out the root cause of those limited beliefs that are ultimately holding you back from living a more fulfilling life.
The reason you can’t seem to overcome your constant need for companionship? That could be tied to a very distant memory from early childhood. I’m generalizing here, but this is just one possible scenario that a life coach could help you tackle that you probably had no idea was holding you back.
They offer sound advice on exactly how to navigate and process the emotions you’re experiencing. You end up walking away with solid strategies and a game plan on what to do moving forward. You’re left with a solid action plan, complete with affirmations, daily exercises, and a new set of belief patterns to adopt.
How is a life coach different from traditional therapy?
Life coaching is therapy. Only less traditional and a little more customized. There are many different types of life coaches out there. Most will use a combination of hypnotherapy, emotional freedom techniques, breath-work, past life regression, visualizations, and affirmations to help their clients work through various issues. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to something as intimate and personal as talking through years of pent-up life shit. I won’t sugarcoat that. Each coach will work in their own way and will more or less tailor the appointment to your specific needs each session.
What can you expect from a session?
Since each session is catered to the individual, everyone’s experience will be different. It’s also one of those things that requires effort on both parts. You get what you put in. There might be homework involved, like daily journaling that will be crucial to seeing results. Most importantly, you have to be willing to be very honest with yourself and your coach. That’s when maximum healing begins. My life coach knows all my drama, my deepest fears, and my most irrational thoughts. It’s a zero judgment zone. There wouldn’t be progress without honesty.
What are the long-term benefits?
My personal experience has been a very positive one. Overall, I’m less paranoid. Without going into obscene detail of my irrational thought pattern history, I will say this: my day-to-day paranoia has severely decreased, which is a huge win for me on so many levels.
I’ve acquired endless knowledge since working with a life coach. The most important thing is that I’ve finally prioritized is my mental health. At 32 and a couple months old, I’d say it was time. I’ve learned how to properly meditate. I’ve learned how to check in with myself, and ultimately that I’m in control of every thought I allow into my brain.
All this to say, the most LA thing I’ve ever done also happens to be the best thing I’ve done over the past year. If we normalized therapy and prioritized mental health, getting a life coach wouldn’t be considered “so LA” in the first place.
